Polyphemus plays an important part in the Odyssey, as one of the monsters that beset Odysseus and his crew on their way back to Ithaca. Cyclopes Cyclops The Cyclopes singular: Cyclops were gigantic, one-eyed beings with enormous strength. He bore a mighty weight of dry wood to serve him at supper time, and flung it down with a crash inside the cave, but we, seized with terror, shrank back into a recess of the cave. While the Phaeacians are civilized and peace loving, the Cyclops have no laws, no councils, and no interest in civility or hospitality.
